NATIONAL RALLY
3rd – 9th NOVEMBER, 2009
MAFFRA SHOWGROUNDS, VICTORIA
President’s Column
Hi and G’day members, how are you going?
I hope this finds you all in good stead. If so how about giving Maffra a thought and come on down to our National Rally. I am asking the old and the new, those that have been and those who have not been to a rally. I believe it will be one you would not want to miss. It is being organised by two of the nicest people, Henk and Lois, and knowing them as I do, they have planned a couple of things that are very different from other rallies. Come and say thanks. The Eastern Lakers branch members would sure like to meet you, and hey, don’t forget at the rally you get to meet me, what more do you want?
Here's a little bit about my recent travels to South Australia with my wife Doreen.
On our way to the Gumnut’s Rally we stayed at Peter and Myra Annells place, and being the hosts they are, they took us around the Barossa Valley. You have to see it to believe the beauty of the area, especially the GrantBurge Winery where the Australian Invitation Eleven Cricket Team go and play. The grounds, gardens and old buildings are something to look at and hold in wonder. They have been given the right treatment down to the very last detail; it is worth going to see. It is also amazing to see the deep valleys and the misty hill peaks all so green and lush.
Time to head up to Laura for the branch meeting. We stopped at a couple of places along the way. It reached dinner time and Peter said, "How about we go to the pub." I was OK with anything, but Myra suggested a nice looking restaurant where we all ordered a chicken pie and coffee. The pie came in a little white glass dish with stuff on top. After we finished eating, Peter asked the lady how much for four coffees and four pies. She replied, "$97 thank you sir."
I started to huff and puff, Peter raised his eye brow and said, “You only get caught once mate”
Laura is a very good spot to have a local branch meeting. It is a very friendly and welcoming town to everyone whether they are on their own or in a group.
The sausage sizzle was cooked perfectly because I personally cooked it. Some gave orders on how to cook a good snag but I think they were lucky to get what they got, god bless them! The monthly meeting went off quite well. We had happy hour in Margaret and Ken's cabin. Everyone joined in the laughing, talking and joking. The fibs being told were unreal; they were very good “happy hours” as it should be.
While I am at this point I must say that before we came to S.A. I rang and said that Doreen and I would like to come to your monthly gathering and I was told only one or two may turn up.
I was told that more would come for the monthly dinner, so I said we will come for the dinner. I didn’t want to drive over 1,000 km for the monthly gathering and be only one of the two or three there.
(Continued on page 3)
(From page 1)
About a fortnight before we were to leave another phone call came and said that most members would be coming to the monthly rally and we would be most welcome to join with them. What a great turn around and the weekend will stay a memorable time for us all.
After the monthly gathering, we left with Freda and John Willis to go back to their residence. They took us into the city on the Oban, also to the car museum. Then we went over to Murray Lindner’s place and he took us down to the mouth of the Murray River which was very dry with house boats still sitting where they were moored and also to a private museum.
Then it was off to Maureen and Terry Barnard’s and we went for a drive around their area and Terry showed us where he goes to the football (with tongue in cheek he is going to change teams next year). The next day Maureen and Terry took us for a lovely day cruise on the ferry. We were lucky enough to be entertained by the Dolphins. Then it was off to Jenny and Ian Cameron’s where Ian took sick and Jenny drove us to their monthly dinner where every-one turned up again and a day of enjoyment was had by all including our two new members Beryl and Arthur Medlin.
We never got lost while we were there because everyone took us to the next persons place. Thank you so much, it’s good to have the friends we have.
As always, I’ve got more to say, so my granddaughter has started me a blog (that’s an online diary) and a You Tube channel (that’s Videos)
I think this will be beneficial to our club –
I’ll see how it goes. You can find it at
http://auswidemotorhomers.blogspot.com
Cheers for now, safe travelling, President Leo.

A man asked an American Indian what was his wife's name.
He replied, "She called Four Horse".
The man said, "That's an unusual name for your wife. What does it mean?"
The Old Indian answered, "It old Indian Name. It mean,
NAG, NAG, NAG, NAG!"
This will be the last Grapevine before the Rally at Maffra. I hope everyone is geared up and ready to go at the time. I hope to see everyone of you there
There must be something wrong with the mail service and or email because there hasn’t been a great response to the call for nominations for positions on the National Committee. As a matter of fact I don’t get much mail from anyone and sometimes I wonder about the job I’m doing because I don’t seem to be doing much at all. I hardly get any mail, I have no letters to write, I answer a few queries for different Branches, keep the data base up to date with new members and print the envelopes for the Grapevine.
When I was sending out the Grapevine by email there were about 175 postings with about 30 emails not deliverable. Tracking down who own these email addresses is a tedious business; so I do ask that if you have changed your email address in the last 6 months please let me know so that I can delete your old address.
A copy of the Grapevine can be accessed on the Hunter Valley Venturers web site if you so desire and will backdate for three issues.
Our President Leo seems to be enjoying himself, hardly ever home, gallivanting around the Branches and generally having fun. The main thing is he is meeting the members and that’s See you at Maffra, Jeff Bishop
SPECIAL NOTE
It has been brought to my attention that a number of our members have been involved in fighting bushfires in recent weeks in NSW.
Thanks for your efforts in the community.
Just for fun
Hospital regulations require a wheel chair for patients being discharged. However, while working as a student nurse, I found one elderly gentleman already dressed and sitting on the bed with a suitcase at his feet, who insisted he didn't need my help to leave the hospital.
After a chat about rules being rules, he reluctantly let me wheel him to the elevator.
On the way down I asked him if his wife was meeting him.
'I don't know,' he said. 'She's still upstairs in the bathroom changing out of her hospital gown.'

BIDGEE BANDITS
Bidgee Bandits had 8 vehicles at our September weekend.
What wonderful weather sunshine & no wind. Saturday night we had a 3 course dinner with dessert, Sunday morning all the ladies were up early to cook a yummy breakfast for the men for father’s day.
We missed Jim & Elizabeth as they were in Melbourne attending Jim’s father’s funeral, our condolences to both of you.
Our next venue is Exhibition Park, Canberra 30/9/09 to 01/10/09 for Floriade $20. per vehicle, all facilities. Norma
HUNTER VALLEY
Twenty two reaped the rewards of an exceptional weekend at the evergreen Stroud Showground from 31st July to 2nd August 2009. Pres. Ron & Treasurer Judy sported their new acquisition - a Fiat Conquest (and very nice too.!!) Peter Veldon & Pres Ron had some problems with "Water in their boots". However some of the more skilled soon had their problem vehicles in good repair.
Many of the group enjoyed the meal at the Hotel on Friday night, & many of the world's problems were solved around the nice fires - with wood gratefully provided by the Showground on both nights.
Pres. Ron expressed his appreciation to John & Maureen for keeping the troops happy during their last month's absence lazing in the hot water pools in Moree & Boomi. Scrumptious cakes were provided for the birthdays celebrated. Kevin (Gadget) Garland displayed the new HVV pocket logo which will be available soon on request at a minimal cost. Congratulations KG - it's a beauty.
Practice disc bowls were played on Saturday - with most of the hotshots sharing the hit outs .
Blind partners doubles (randomly selected from the hat) were played on Sunday with 16 participants. Maureen Cotton teaming with Cyril won the finals from Dorothy K & Bobbie McNamara. In the surprise final "desperate" doubles challenge from Pres. Ron & Gary H. Resulted in Secretary Allan Bush & yours truly victory at 10/1 & 10/4. (Watch this space for next month's champions.!!!!!!!!!!)
Overall another successful weekend - with good company - perfect weather - & great location.
Until next month - good health - safe travelling - & "Let's keep the dream alive.".
"Squirrels Hutch".
RIVERINA RAGERS
Riverina Ragers’ September gathering took place at Trundle Showground on the weekend of 4th/5th September for the Camp-Oven Cook-off. Our group included the Newtons, Watts, Hyders and Dennys and welcomed Kevin Garland from the Hunter Valley Venturers who was joining Leo & Doreen to continue his trip to Leeton. Other visitors were Maxine & Ken Williams from Browthen (between Cowra and Young) who will be joining our branch in the near future.
On Friday afternoon we enjoyed a game of Disc Bowls. This event unexpectedly provided entertainment for our campground neighbours. The cook-off took place on Saturday with each team preparing gourmet dishes for the competition. Our ticket into the event entitled us to sample some of the entries. Stalls, barrel races and other activities made for an enjoyable day. Leo & Doreen have vowed to return as cooking competitors next year.
We shared a campsite meal that evening from where we could hear the great music of the festival well into the night.
On Sunday, our safari home took us through Condobolin with a lunch stop at Gum Bend Lake. Unfortunately the lake has been without water for 4 years but this is still a great free camp spot with all facilities.
A great weekend for our little group who enjoyed one another’s company once again.
SYDNEY SUNDOWNERS
We had good weather for our weekend at Rathmines, & enjoyed the company of our new members Joe & Patricia Maugeri. We went for walks along the vast network of pathways taking in many of the historic sites from when this area was a base & maintenance depot for flying boats. Some of us boosted the towns economy by visiting the local craft & souvenir shop. Tony & Beth Baker visited us one afternoon. One night we had a BBQ the rest of the time was spent relaxing.
Our recent trip to Parkes & surrounding district started with us all meeting at Carcor Dam where it rained & hailed on our first night, wanting better weather we travelled to Goolagong the next day & stayed in the local rest area which boasts toilets, hot showers & power all for a honesty donation. From there we travelled to Forbes & Parkes where we inspected the radio telescope which was very interesting. From Parkes it was on to Condobolin staying at Gum Bend Lake [still no water], The next day we said our good byes as we each took different ways home
SUNCHASERS
A happy group of Sunchasers enjoyed a lunch time meet at Bribie Island for July. It was really nice to catch up with some who no longer come camping with us. The sun was warm and the day fine. The fish selection and salads and chips enjoyed by all.
This was followed by a move to shady beachside park close to the Ice-cream and Coffee Cafe for dessert. The local Arts and Craft Market was enjoyed by some prior to lunch which had many varied craft items demonstrated and on sale.
We missed the company of our regular members who are suffering ill health. Looking forward to seeing you again soon. Cheers,
Carol - Acting Scribe.
GUMNUTS

APPLE ISLANDERS
Our August Rally was held at Bishopsbourne in the North of the State. 12 vans rolled up with 2 day visitors. What a top winter venue. The heaters were even turned off at one stage. We did not know whether it was “Hot Flushes” going round or just plenty of “red faces.”
A hardy few set off to explore the local tombstones. Two fit ladies took off with a stride and returned over an hour later. On arrival back at the venue a bike race was in the process, no not any of our members were fool hardy enough to participate, the excuse was I think you needed a bike to compete.
The Saturday evening theme was to bring and share a casserole. Wow what a variety of tasty dishes. Most of the folks moved into the other hall for another exciting night of carpet bowls. Lots of kitty hitting with a few even rolling off the carpet, was that supposed to happen I wonder?
Sunday saw the usual round of “Goodbyes, see you at the next Rally”. Some vans ventured onto Longford for a cuppa, chat and cake at the local bakery. Word quickly spread of “SALE” at the local store – some finding a bargain or two before heading off home in different directions.
The sun shone over us and once again a beautiful winter Tassie weekend was enjoyed by happy campers. Rumour has it we are off to Gretna Green for the next Rally, anyone running away to get married I wonder?

BASS STRAIT DRIFTERS
At 3.30 pm. Friday, with only 2 motor homes present, our July rally at Bishopsbourne looked like a disaster. but things improved. The final tally was 16, whose hardy crews were prepared to brave the cold weather predicted. We had more than the usual number of day visitors on Saturday.
Those of us who were there for the weekend assumed they were not up to facing the cold, but were not prepared to miss the superb Saturday lunch. So as not to damage their reputation, they can remain nameless, but we expect them at future winter rallies.
It was cold overnight as low as zero, though it warmed to a reasonable level by afternoon. We had considerable rain but only through the night.
We welcomed long time BSD members Barb/George Andrews from Nyah Victoria, and new members Pauline and Wayne Williams.
We missed Margaret Heazelwood and Dot/Norm Smith, as Margaret and Norm are still recovering from their health setbacks . We look forward to seeing them at a rally very soon.
All four Tasmanian Branches were represented. 9 -BSD, 5-CR, 1-Forester and 1-AI. The sight of all 4 branches working together, preparing the sumptuous Saturday lunch was sufficient to draw comment from BSD vice president Fred.
The well heated hall proved a god send, and was in continuous use. As a result there was even more talking, eating, drinking and playing games than usual. The togetherness ensured everyone had a good time.
Forty sat down to a 2 course meal on Saturday, casserole and dessert lunch. The food was a credit to all who helped in the preparation.
As usual there was so much food, so much so everyone enjoyed a repeat for dinner. Two oversize meals in one day, was a real challenge to those of us who claim to be dieting, but the food was too good to knock back. All day visitors stayed for dinner so the food must have been good.
After a great weekend most headed home reasonably early on Sunday, but are looking forward to the August rally at the Devonfield Complex, Devonport where Lynne and her willing team will no doubt overfeed everyone once more
Happy camping all, Judy
The August Rally venue was changed at short notice from the Ulverstone Veteran Car Club to Devonfield Complex, at Devonport. The change plus other factors contributed to the disappointing attendance of 7 motor homes.
We welcomed Robin McKeen for the first time for a while, and some regulars, the Ayletts, Willis, Robinsons and Holdens had excellent reasons why they could not attend with their motor homes.
The Willis and Robinsons were in attendance all weekend and the Holdens were day visitors on Saturday
The Willis and Robinsons had an eventful weekend. After paying $95 per night at a local caravan park, they were disgusted at the cabins lack of cleanliness. So much so, they requested and received a full refund & found accommodation elsewhere. They also helped the local economy by spending up big on Saturday morning.
Lyn ably helped by Margaret ensured everyone was well fed. Fifteen enjoyed soup, savoury toast and golden syrup dumplings on Friday evening, and twenty-two sat down to Saturday dinner comprising roast meat and vegies, deep fried cauliflower and onion rings, as well as delicious pavlova and cheesecakes.
Devonfield is a complex for respite for disabled adults, and has excellent facilities for Auswide rallies. The complex also benefits from all funds raised during our rallies. Last year our Christmas dinner rally was held at Devonfield, and was so successful, it was unanimously agreed to return this year. The rally will be held the same weekend as the Devonport Show and is guaranteed to be a great success.

On a very windy, wet weekend, 8 motor homes arrived at Wynyard Yacht Club—where we soon gathered ourselves together, the first arrivals walked to a little café called “Spash” where we had a delicious meal, great coffee and marvellous service, on top of that, great prices!! Totally recommend it!! Back to club room, jigsaw came out, word games and cards.
That evening we had a kangaroo court—Judge Peter was in fine form, “Rooster” Ling was resplendent in his garb, Lawyer James had the worry beads working overtime, clerk of the court Suzie Q had hair problems, plaintiff Tony could not stop laughing and Roosters lawyer was right on the ball….. cameras were going nonstop and a great belly laugh for all of us!!
Saturday, walks in to town, the boys went and checked out the Wonders of Wynyard, girls were jig sawing and carding, in the evening we all had a great meal at the RSL club and wandered back for more cards etc.
Sunday dawned a little better, so out came the kites for a while, then some of us went on a nice long walk, which was great after all the rain we have had. We all departed for home late morning after a great weekend again….many thanks to Peter and Elaine for organizing the rooms for us.
It was really appreciated. Sue.
FORESTERS
Seven vans camped on the Gordon Foreshore for the start of the spring season. A large fire pot was kept alight by Joe who also supplied the wood.
Visitors Pauling and Wayne arrived from their trip to Bruny Island and Ted and Joy visited us as well. Les kept the group supplied with fresh fish just caught. Lesley and Googie brought their grandsons along for the trip and watched them hitting golf balls and being just boys.
Some of us tried fishing off the nearby jetty but didn’t even get a bite just getting soaked by a passing shower. It was unfortunate that Hazel could not talk due to laryngitis which made for a few funny remarks, but it was good to hear the voice slowly returning over the weekend.
Friday weather was a bit touchy with a few heavy showers.
Saturday saw the sunny weather deteriorate in the afternoon with a stiff cold sea breeze making us run for warm gear to keep warm and to put more wood on the fire. Late Saturday saw more visitors arrive and the evening turned out to be one of the best. One of the group not to be named had an unforeseen shower when taking down her awning not realising it had filled up with water. That’s a trap for new players indeed.
Sunday looked like being a pleasant day but it mostly is on the day that we have to pack up and go home. A great venue and a good weekend.

EASTERN LAKERS
Our weekend at Buchan was a small group.. After a cold wet week, only three motor homes came out of their garages, so it was you, me and the other bloke. It rained just as we arrived on Friday, but Saturday and Sunday were perfect for sitting out in the sun.
There are powered and un-powered sites, a lot of tent sites, camp fire pits as well as electric b.b.q s scattered around the park, and a large camp kitchen with a big open fire place. This building is very solid as it is made from local stone.
Trees from all over the world are in the park, they are all named as well as having the country of origin on the name plaque. In front of the visitors centre in pride of place is a giant American Redwood, it’s just a baby with a circumference a bit over five and a half metres.
The walks ranged from easy to hard. Visitors were coming and going all weekend to go into the caves. The grass is kept trimmed by the kangaroos, they come out about four o’clock and are not worried by the campers.
We were entertained by two kookaburras having a bath, and saw parrots and other birds as well, Each morning was foggy and there were interesting photo opportunities.
It is quiet at this time of the year, we shared with a hand full of other week end campers but the park is booked out at Christmas and Easter. Long talks, varied topics in which we put the world’s
problems right.

GIPPSLAND RAMBLERS
Our rally in August was held at the Masonic Hall in Bunyip. Only one unit arrived on Thursday, followed by four more on Friday. Some day visitors called in on Saturday for the day.
Colin had been asked to put some green and yellow balloons at the turn of to the venue. Unfortunately we did not see the expected balloons. When asked, Colin said he put them up on a telephone pole on Thursday but by Friday morning there was only the
remains left. (Kids?)
On Friday night we were entertained by the Bunyip Lady Singers who performed to perfection. They asked us to sing along if we wished, but a finger was wagged at Stan when he sang the wrong words. We made a donation to their funds. Actually, there were more singers that audience.
Because of the lack of numbers, there was no Bar-B-Que on Sunday. We cleaned up early and then gritted our teeth to tackle the very windy drive home.
A very enjoyable weekend was had by those that attended.
Please hurry back Liz.
Safe travelling. Carol.
Crossover Rally was very pleasant, very windy but sunny and mostly dry.
Venue has a new wood heater set into the fireplace that was alight when we arrived on Thursday, but the rest of the weekend was mild. Also we appreciated the new shower facility in the unisex / disabled toilet section at the end of the path. A great venue for a small rally and a credit to the managing committee there.
Welcome to Irene and Maurice Whitely from Seaford, friends of Pam and Frank. They have downsized their previous motorhome. We wish them many happy miles in their Hi-ace, and hope they enjoy our rallies.
By mid afternoon Friday we were 12 units, with David and Valda coming on Saturday. Unfortunately for them the wind caught their roof vent in the night causing damage, no one else reported damage although most of us were rocked by some strong gusts.
On Saturday we had a visit from Shirley, looking fit and pain free, and Anne Ramsdale who is still enjoying tripping around. Lois and Les came in their car. Making 27 members taking part over the weekend.
Reminder for Boolarra rally.
October 8th to 11th. Directions are in detail in the Grapevine, otherwise Vic roads map 97

Telstra Phone book
Hi everyone,
For anyone contemplating using the Sensis directory service number, 1234, DON'T!
Sensis, as you may or may not know, is a subsidiary of Telstra. The 1234 number is replacing the Telstra 12456 directory assistance number, but this time with outrageous costs attached: 40c to call the number, then
4c A SECOND!
By law, Telstra have to provide a FREE directory assistance number, because they are still majority owned by the government. They choose however not to pass this number on to the public.
What's the free number? 1223
Thumbs down to Telstra for finding a way to 'charge', for a service that is supposed to be provided for free.
Of course, feel free to forward this on...

One day a florist goes to a barber for a haircut. After the cut he asked about his bill and the barber replies, 'I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The florist was pleased and left the shop.
When the barber goes to open his shop the next morning there is a 'thank you' card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door.
Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill, the barber again replies, 'I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The cop is happy and leaves the shop.
The next morning when the barber goes to open up there is a 'thank you' card and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door.
Later that day, a college professor comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill, the barber again replies, 'I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The professor is very happy and leaves the shop.
The next morning when the barber opens his shop, there is a 'thank you' card and a dozen different books, such as 'How to Improve Your Business' and 'Becoming More Successful.'
Then, a Member of Parliament comes in for a haircut , and when he goes to pay his bill the barber again replies, 'I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The MP is very happy and leaves the shop.
The next morning when the barber goes to open up, there are a dozen MPs lined up waiting for a free haircut.
And that, my friends, illustrates the fundamental difference between the citizens of our country and the Members of Parliament.

Rest Areas in West Gippsland
This general information may be useful for motorhomers who wish to spend some time before or after the National rally visiting Melbourne, Phillip Island or Mornington Peninsula area.
Garfield Railway Station has an hourly passenger service to Melbourne, approximate travel time 75 minutes, and all services stop at Garfield.
Road connections to Phillip Island and Mornington Peninsula are sealed roads across the Koo Wee Rup Swamp.
If coming from the north, Garfield is approximately 20 kms east of Pakenham, just off the M1 Freeway and about 1 hour from the Tasmanian Ferry. Pakenham has good shopping and services.
Suitable Rest Areas.
1. From Pakenham 16 kms on M1 Freeway, on left look for “Big Pheasant” and exit by Gumbuya Park gate and follow signs on old highway to toilet block.
2. On M1 Freeway 1 km past “Big Pheasant” move to right hand lane and turn right to Garfield. 1.5 km and at bottom of hill turn right to enter Railway Station Car Partk.
3. From bottom of hill turn left, go 500 metres, make “U” turn over railway bridge, and turn left at coffee shop on corner into Ritchie Street and pass toilet block. Park at lower end of street or from this point you will see Bowling Green and a level parking area exists behind the club house.
Maffra is about 2 hours travel time from Garfield.
If more information is required, phone Colin Teese on (03) 5629 2522 as I live in Garfield.
