Maffra was great !!!
Gidday and how are you going? I hope this finds you all in good stead. I am sitting the next day at Elly and Joe’s place at Darnum after the Rally, trying to think and write about the activities of the week and to try and talk about everything is mind boggling. So please forgive me for any mistakes. Those that were there will understand as there was so much on, and some of the activities I have not seen before and will never forget.
Like the horse racing where I came 2nd and that was only by the turn of the dice because I was riding well. But for Murray Lindner going around the outside and jamming me on the rails I might have made it and I don’t think I was paid either. What about the Disc Bowls! The umpire, Trevor Atkins wears glasses and they fell off just as I was about to throw my Disc. He bent down to pick the glasses up and the bloke with the bushy moustache, Ted Hazeldene at the same time gave me a push. In went my foot to save myself just as the Umpire looked up. My bowl lands and spins on the jack and he said “you’re out” I think, “thanks fellows” It was a day to remember, I really enjoyed it.
As it was with all members sitting around the tables, branches and friends dividing up to sit and meet and make new friends I think was one of the best parts of the Rally I myself met and made new friends from other branches. This would not have happened if we never made the change. I, and the love of my life Doreen, would like to say thank you to you all. Every one of you at the Rally that took part, makes one’s heart miss a beat and skip with emotion, not that a tear would drop but you know. Anyway, as just pointed out to me by Doreen, we did not get to meet you all because of one’s duties. Never mind, I will get to meet you all before I am done.
I also have to thank David Ballard for standing in as assistant secretary for the Rally which kept him pretty busy off and on each day. David, all I can say is, “Thanks mate.” To David’s lovely wife Valda, now our ex Treasurer, a tear drop or two fell around the hall when Valda announced her retirement. It was that bad, I thought Stephen with a tear in his eye, was coming over to give Valda her title as treasurer back. But with the grace and flexibility of a fawn deer, he turned and returned to his seat. Tears did fall with the retirement, since Valda had held the position of Treasurer from the beginning of the club, apart from a period of 3 years when John McCabe was the Treasurer. We will miss you, but I know that you will be there next year saying, “Leo, you have to do this and, have they done that?”
Thanks Valda, we all love you.
As I said at the start, if I have made any mistakes please forgive me. I must not go any further without thanking Lois and Henk and their bank of volunteers. How could anyone in their right mind forget who organised and ran such a great Rally. What they achieved was just great. The Showground with electric power that was needed, toilets, showers and the facilities were first class.
Thank you Lois and Henk for your efforts.
I remember someone asking, “What could we do about new membership.” I forgot to mention to all Branch Presidents and Secretaries to get on to Jeff, our National Secretary, and get some Application Forms so you have them with you when needed. Anyone out there knowing a way of recruiting new members, let our Secretary Jeff know.
We would like to welcome Stephen (Joy) Finlay from the Hunter Valley Venturers to the Management Committee as our new Treasurer. We received an apology from our Secretary Jeff (Wendy) Bishop who were unable to attend the Rally at the last minute. Jeff was advised by his superior (Wendy) to sit down, put his feet up and have a snort, but I was still in contact by phone to get Jeff’s advice. An apology from Alan and Gwen Wright. Alan was unable to come after being advised by his doctor to rest his injuries, and was also advised to have two snorts. Also an apology from our Tasmania Rep Fred (Marlene) Willis who were unable to attend because of personal reasons.
Doreen and I will be travelling to Tasmania during the remainder of November and early December to say gidday and to attend the Christmas Meetings.
PS Did you know that the word stressed is desserts spelt backwards.? I didn’t, so I thought that you would like to know, as if and when I have desserts, I don’t know how I feel. God Bless President Leo Watts
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all our Members and travel safe
I wish to apologise to the members for my non appearance at the Rally held at Maffra this year. We were set up in the showground at Sale waiting for the Rally to commence when our pet Maltese Terrier had 3 fits on the Monday and 1fit on the Tuesday. The Vet was not very encouraging as to the future health of Molly so we decided that if anything was to be carried out on her it would be at home. We left early on the Wednesday preceding the Rally and drove straight through to Newcastle. Since she has been under her own Vet her health has improved dramatically.
I believe the Rally was successful with few hiccups which would be a relief to the organisers Lois and Henk and Volunteers.
We now have a new Treasurer, Stephen Finlay from Hunter Valley Venturers and a new Victorian State Representative, Don Webb from Gippsland Ramblers. Welcome gentlemen and I hope you will enjoy yourselves in your new positions.
The National Committee approved the purchase of a computer programme whereby the quality of the Grapevine is increased and will present in a much better format than previously carried out. I intend to carry out a test run again using the new programme which will be in PDF format. Recipients will need to have Adobe Reader installed on their machines to be able to open the Grapevine and if you haven’t got it then it can be downloaded for free from the web. As with the previous test a printed copy will still be sent to each club member. If you have trouble with it I want to know about it; so please communicate with me.
Some members will notice that there is a slip from me highlighting their incorrect email address with this issue of the Grapevine. I would appreciate it if those members would contact me regarding their current email addresses so that changes can be made. Jeff Bishop, Secretary

BIDGEE BANDITS
We decided to do a safari to Maffra to get to the rally it started on Wednesday the 28th October with some members having an overnight stop in Batemans Bay. Thursday night we stayed at Yellow Pinch Dam where some more members joined us. Stephen and Joy from Hunter Valley Venturers joined us as well. When we left the next morning some of us went their own way while some continued on to Genoa where we were having our next overnight stop.
When Jim and Elizabeth got to Cann River they saw Ron and Beryl who travelled with us to Orbost. We decided to wander around the shops for awhile then found a nice shady spot to have some lunch. In the meantime the stragglers had caught up. They were going through Orbost back onto the highway when we saw them and we caught up with them in Newmerella where they had stopped for lunch.
After leaving Nowa Nowa the Marshalls had a bit of excitement. They had a tyre blow out on their motorhome. We only went a short distance where we could get off the road completely when Jim called for assistance. Mick and Stephen came to help us. When Jim went looking for the jack handle he couldn’t find it so they used the levellers. It was high enough to get the tyre off [the handle was there all the time he just couldn’t see it] Thank you to Mick and Stephen for their assistance.
Our next overnight stop was at the Burnt Bridge Rd rest area. When Jim and Elizabeth got up for breakfast the next day they didn’t have any gas left in the tank. We were able to get gas in Lakes Entrance. When we left the campsite we had morning tea in a park in Bairnsdale.
Some members went to stay at Marlay Point while two couples decided to stay at the caravan park in Sale, Jim went into Sale on Monday morning to see about getting the spare tyre fixed but it couldn’t be done until after the rally. Tuesday it was time to go to Maffra for the rally.
HUNTER VALLEY
While the rally was winding down, fourteen stay at homers went to Tomago Bowling Club for the weekend. The threatening weather didn't stop us enjoying the usual card games and disk bowls. I think I set a new record, (five knockouts in one afternoon ).
We also managed to relieve the club of a few raffle prizes while enjoying a great meal.
Joy and Dave only came for the day. Didn't bring their latest acquisition though. This one sounds like a real bargain.
That’s all J.C.

"A night with the stars" is the best way to describe our featured activity for the September meet.
'Sunchasers' went to the Maidenwell Astonomical Observatory.
As there was a large number of the Bayside Offroaders Club there, the observatory owner asked if
we would mind being part of the Friday group. This was very fortunate because, on Saturday, the
skies were overcast with dust and smoke. James Barclay is passionate about his subject; he
enjoys telling facts in an enjoyable way; and showing the moon and stars through his telescopes
which fortunately, are height adjustable for the star gazer..
For this Scribe, one of the best parts takes place outside the observatory when James uses his
laser beam (which reaches fifteen kilometres into the sky and requires a special users licence) to
point out the constellations etc. then, the rather dramatic start to the "show" comes into it's own.
We saw craters on the moon, star clusters etc., and ended by looking at Jupiter with four of it's
moons - that was startling. There was more to it than that and too much to tell here.
We were pleased to welcome five visitors, Wendy and Ross, Rae who is a local and Christine and
Les. The Bayside Offroaders were a large and friendly group with an interesting assortment of
camping styles.
On Saturday, Carol and some of the visitors went for a walk to Coomba Falls, had a paddle,
talked to the locals and had a smile at the antics of the wild goats. It was a warm day, so some of
us spent a bit of time in the pub having a drink and talking with the publican and some of the
bikers passing through to a meet of their own "further up the road".
Dinner that night was 'Pig on
a spit', served at the pub, it was delicious.
Sunday saw the members breakfasting on bacon, eggs, hash browns and sausages, once again,
delicious. To complete the culinary weekend, a mulberry bush was loaded with ripe fruit. Even the
stained fingers were worthwhile.
Joan Sharpe, Acting Scribe.
Sunchasers enjoyed a weekend at Kenilworth on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland in September.
Kenilworth is a small township on the banks of the Mary River and has a friendly population.
The Cricket Club played a home game against Wamuran and the locals won. We enjoyed watching the grounds being prepared the day before, and the game was interesting.
Right by the showgrounds is the Community Swimming Pool, we made good use of this; the
weather was warm and the water refreshing. Our swimming skills varied widely from, me doing
five laps, and Margaret doing 28. We all enjoyed the water in different ways.
As everything was so relaxed, some of us decided on a policy of "No cooking" and we enjoyed
meals at the Pub which was only a short walk from the showground.
It was nice to be joined by
other motorhomers and caravanners at the pub and in our "Happy Hours". Others found a nice place for morning coffee. Margaret and Barry gave us a demonstration of petanque, a game that they have taken up recently.
We are almost a the end of the year so on behalf of Sunchasers, I wish everyone a Good
Christmas and Happy New Year.
Joan Sharpe, Acting Scribe.

What a beautiful weekend was had at Gretna Green. Pity no run away weddings though.
11 vans turned up to this tiny little hamlet in the Derwent Valley. Friday evening saw the darts and cards being played. The fire was certainly roaring. What a view we had of the rolling fields, hills and snow capped Mt Field National Park after we ventured for a stroll to the nearby War monument.
Whilst the Committee was meeting others enjoyed a sun-filled afternoon.
Saturday evening saw us very much welcomed at the “local” for a hearty meal. Following this the fellas played eight ball, for motorhomes not sheep stations and the ladies got the cards out.
Sunday saw the showers coming over the hills as we were heading home. Scribe - Cheryl
Bagdad Golf Club was the venue for our October Gathering after being transferred from Deep Bay at short notice. 15 motorhomes arrived to be greeted by hosts Pauline & Roy, cold damp weather had us in the warmth of the club house and lively chatter between members was soon in hand.
Early evening witnessed the arrival of the "Mexican Train", the ladies gathered around Roy & Pauline for the unveiling of an up market version of " Dominoes" which was played late into the nights. We enjoy our Auswide weekends and always look forward to the next month’s gathering. Judy M.-Scribe
Early in November our members in 18 motorhomes enjoyed perfect weather beside the river at New Norfolk, just a short drive north of Hobart. A picture perfect spot with the river on one side and the Bowls Club on the other where on Saturday night we all enjoyed a meal.
Our new marquee, erected with Garry’s identical one, provided great cover from the summer sun, whilst the evenings were warmed by 3 or 4 fire pots (and 3 or 4 ports!) Lone Ranger “Snoopy” Dave kept everyone on their toes with his 20c six gun targeting the wearing of name tags and dog owners – no-one escaped and our charity moneybox benefited.
Many thanks to hosts Roger and Irene for a great weekend and their efforts in arranging for Council employees to cut the long grass and clear the camp area. Bruce
BASS STRAIT DRIFTERS
The September Rally was held in the north east at Bellingham and the weather stayed fine.
There were 10 vans altogether which were 9 BSD and 1 Coastal Ranger which was a good roll up as some of our members are still enjoying travelling on the mainland and overseas. It was good to see Lucy and Rob back after an absence.
We had day visitors of Bernard and Betty, Norm and Dot and Garry and Mavis.
Everyone was pleased to see Norm out and about and we wish him well in his recovery.
A busy time was had by all between playing ‘golf’ organised by Kaye where the rules seemed to be made up as they went and also playing indoor bowls. Jan kept us entertained with her music.
We had delicious hamburgers on Saturday thanks to our cook Ron and his helpers, what a feed!! It certainly kept everyone quiet for awhile.
Thanks to everyone for the donations for our monster raffle and to Graham for the lucky gate prize which was won by Dorothy and Michael.
The fire pot of John and Fran kept everyone cosy in the evenings.
A very enjoyable time was had by all. We are looking forward to returning to Bellingham for the New Years Eve Rally.
Keep smiling. Rosalie
Our rally at Cosy Corner was very successful. We had an attendance of 18 vans, 15 B.S. Drifters and 3visitors. Kim and Judy Swan who are potential members , Glo and Alan Grice, and Gary and Mavis Whatley who are still motor homeless. We hope to see them in their new one soon
It was with regret we heard of the passing of Ted Hayes an Auswide member who will be sadly missed.
Thanks again to Wayne Williams for his ute load of wood and the lovely fire.
There were several art students making the most of the lovely weather. It is nice to see Lorraine Atkinson back on her feet after her knee reconstruction. Cheers Judy.

A good turn up of nine vans ventured to Chain of Lagoons on Tasmania’s lovely east coast ocean beach for a delightful weekend. A variety of weather conditions that one can imagine, mostly hot, but also rain, thunder, you name it, did not deter the happy group from having a good time.
The campers were protected by Sandra’s 9 inch high dachshund guard dog, who barked when necessary and then ran to Mum for protection. David enlightened us about Bali with stories from his holidays, eg., lots of rice and low payment for things domestic and hot weather. Hazel was the only Forester who tried to catch a fish, everyone else around seemed to catch one but not Hazel, maybe it was the wrong bait Hazel?
A photo album of original Forester activities was passed around and created much amusement and reminiscing about good times gone by. Some hardy players decided to have a go at disc bowls, but found the ground much too lumpy so that was given up as a bad idea.
Everyone enjoyed the large camp fires at night time after a good BBQ and many good stories were told. The music man turned up and a good old sing song ensued, to lots of hand clapping. Great amusement when Rex put on his full length white wet weather poncho and the general consensus was that he looked like something that was ‘unmentionable’.
A great weekend was had by all at a lovely venue despite the inclement weather.

EASTERN LAKERS
Swifts Creek We had visitors at breakfast so didn’t arrive until after lunch. As we drove in we could recognize most of the vehicles there, but a neat white and blue motor home had us saying what a nice compact clean unit it was (wonder who it is ?) Thoughts of visitors or a new member had us guessing. All was revealed when out steps Ian to direct us to a spot. It was their latest purchase, it was inspected by all and declared a little beauty.
The weekend was a bit chilly, lucky for us the shelter shed was large with a big square chimney in the center with open fire places on all four sides. Naturally we picked the one out of the wind, we had taken some wood ( not enough ) and were directed to a chopped up tree, quite a distance away and as we had not set up, we drove down to the tree and loaded a big pile of wood into our motor home. Out came the chairs once the fire was nice and warm, and there we stayed
There were six caravans at the park, they were working bee people from various areas, all retired and had come to Swifts Creek to work on the Uniting Church. On Saturday morning we were invited to inspect the work that had been done, and from there we were shown a Memorial at the school the welding class had made in memory of Ken and Rosemarys’ grandson. Ken acted as our unofficial guide and told us a bit about the area. We walked the town, looked at the wall art, visited the Gallery and the Bakery (of course ) and the men debated about what sort of fish would be in the river..
We made sure our meeting was early and quick so the afternoon was left free for the Grand Final, Glenda brought her radio down, and the workers knocked off early and set up a T.V. on the other side and sat around their fire so we listened in and when it got too exciting Ted ducked around to have a quick look.
John could only come as a day visitor this time, so came for lunch that way he wouldn’t miss out on our b.b.q. Thank you to all our workers, all packed up just at the right time. as it started get colder and it rained, so home we went….a stress free weekend.

It was a joy to travel through the green country side on Thursday and the weather nice for the weekend. When it was cold the Coonara worked well.
Boolarra was quite affected by the fires last February and the hill behind the recreation reserve is all blackened. It was only due to helicopter water drops that the houses on the hill survived.
3 units Thursday, 6 more on Friday, Steven and Tasmanian Auswide member Lorraine came on Friday and Steven came as day visitor each day. Flo, Stan & Carol and Lois & Les were day visitors on Saturday. Mervyn and Sylvia came down from their commitment in Albury on Thursday and left Saturday after pancake breakfast for niece’s wedding in Melbourne on Saturday, busy people.
Friday after our Counter Tea at the Pub Mervyn showed us a Program of their photos from a tour of India 3 years ago, Sylvia narrated. The big screen that dropped down from the ceiling was used and was very good. Mervyn said it took months to edit photos, with Indian music background. Much enjoyed by everyone. Thank you both.
Colin had several “senior moments” over the weekend, and Don effectively relocated the snake that was sunning itself not far from Grace and Arthur’s van.
Saturday started with Pancakes for breakfast, very easy and much appreciated. We are still using the big bag bought for the combined rally in April.
Saturday night saw the running of the Auswide Cup, I think this was a country meeting and the winner of a reduced field of horses was Canterbury George (Frank Isaacs). Pinky Wattle (Ralph) 2nd and Lanky Legs
(Hetty) 3rd. There were 18 scratchings (apologies) and 7 withdrawals ( left before the race.)
Because we missed the members who usually organized things we were a bit muddled, nevertheless we managed a “fashion on the field” Hat and Tie competition, Hat won by Chook, and Tie section won by Colin. President awarded the cup and medals to the winners. Several members were participating in their first Auswide Cup – much fun and cheering happened. Liz.

Our September Rally at Upper Yarra Reservoir Dam was a pleasant week-end for catching up after being on our winter recess. A very popular venue with families camping over the school break a wonderful environment for the children. The B.B.Q being put to use along with the use of the room for laptop viewing pictures a members trip of W.A. Many walks then time to leave.
October Rally Akoonah Park Travelling to this venue in heavy rain the weather changed and we all settled in well, walks, trips to the local shops coffee and snacks most enjoyable. Bill & Lyn introduced us to a new game Jenga. The object to be the last player to stack a block without knocking the tower over "great fun". The large market stalls held on the Sunday was a treat to us all with many goodies.
National Rally MAFFRA. Our branch was represented by four units. The venue was excellent for our meet, bringing many friendly members in the spirit of joining in together for a great time. To the town folk, we say thank you in making us feel so welcome.
Would nominate them for a tidy clean town as well.
Congratulations to our Trekker members who did well with the disc bowls. A great friendly Rally Congratulations to all who participated in making it a success.

The Auswide Motorhome Rally at Maffra
From Queensland south to Tassie through untold mountain passes
From the West coast some have travelled crossed deserts, some with grasses
The locals are all in wonder at the motor homes all parked in line
At the Showground just near Maffra and the weather stayed just fine
The friendship that was offered never faulted for a moment
Like the cheese and wine tasting, this really needs no comment.
While trips around the district were scenic and relaxing
While others tried new crafts, some found them very taxing.
Some practiced at their Disc Bowls, and others just relaxed,
As Happy Hour came around each day and no one there was taxed.
The Poets Breakfast it was great and held the throng in rapture
With their humour, their repertoire, an audience to capture!
But the Rally has to end you know, from new friends we must depart
As we pack up gear to head for home for most a slowly start,
Some will travel to other places and hold their heads up high
As they tell of all the fun they had at Maffra, then, end up with a sigh.

Bertram Eric Darcy “Eric” Stafford

“What a great guy.”
Bertram Eric Darcy Stafford [Eric] was a founding member of the AUSWIDE Motorhome Club Inc. and for three years was National President of our Club.
Some 11 years ago Eric was part of a group which saw the need for a new motorhome club along the lines we now enjoy. Together this group, with the support of many, achieved their aim and formed AUSWIDE.
Fundamental to the formation of the Club was “Motorhome Insurance”.
During his working life Eric had been a Founding Director of the Oil Agents Mutual Provident Society [now known as OAMPS] Consequently through his contacts, OAMPS commenced to provide the insurance many of us, both members and non members, enjoy. Having insurance allowed AUSWIDE to be formed.
Initially Eric was comfortable being President of the Gippsland Ramblers Branch until he finally accepted the role of National President
In this role Eric’s experience and manner continued the development of our club and what we stood for. Eric always stood up for what he believed was right in all circumstances.
Eric was a man that was very willing to give of his expertise, his time, his effort, his sympathy, his empathy and encouragement to those around him.
After moving to the West, Eric remained a member of the club, and was always pleased to receive The Grapevine which enabled him to keep up with the activities of the branches.
Eric and Pat were always pleased to welcome those members who chose to call in and say hello when travelling through the Western Australia area.
A wonderful friend who we will remember for all time and our love and sympathy goes out to Pat
and all the family.

THANK YOU
Eastern Lakers say…thank you to the Auswide members who came to Maffra. We hope you enjoyed the week, we tried to make it fuss free and friendly.
Our Cup night was a first for a lot of people…you may never see another like it.
The C.F.A. members that were coming over to do the games night were very apologetic, and felt guilty they had let us down, due to fire call outs, but it couldn’t be helped.
It was great to see so many Mexicans on Saturday night. Some outfits were the real thing and some were pretty good imitations. It helps to make the fun.
Thank you to the Eastern Lakers for your encouragement and help through the year, and to Bob and Glenda for the delicious cake, stirred by all the family for luck and made with love.
The party is over… we had a fire call ten minutes after getting home (we didn’t go) but did relief on Tuesday.
So put next years date down and come and catch up with new and old friends, it makes the effort worth while.
Thank you, Henk and Lois

Letter to all members
On the 16th October 2009 David and I begin our next adventure – our move to Queensland!
We have met so many wonderful people in our 60 years and it has been wonderful in the last couple of months to be able to be with, and relive, some of those memories with friends long past.
David has many outstanding memories from his days growing up with his father in the tourism industry and our memories of all the years of raising our family, the years beyond and I am still finding out my mysterious history when I was young. We will be travelling to Noosa initially to attend our daughter Tania’s wedding and will then live in our motorhome in the Broadwater Caravan Park while we search the Gold Coast area for our ‘third’– last home.
A long time in the making but it is so suddenly happening. Unfortunately we are unable to catch up with so many we would like to have said a personal goodbye to. We wish you much happiness and thank you all for your friendship.
We will of course expect emails and in due course visits when we re-settle.
Love to you all, David and Denise Creswell
